Jean-Pierre Martin

Drawing on a diverse career, Jean-Pierre Martin has developed leading technical skills, recognised within his professional community. Passionate about nature, hunting, forging and mechanics, he naturally found his path in knife-making, exploring a world where his interests converge.

His first steps in knife-making took the form of designing fixed-blade knives for hunting and skinning, as well as pieces intended for carving service. However, the journey took a decisive turn a few years ago when he began creating his first folding knife. This new challenge confronted him with unprecedented technical issues, but he seized the opportunity to push the boundaries of his art.

Meetings with prominent figures in the global knife-making world were key moments for Jean-Pierre. These exchanges enabled him to address the technical complexities involved in designing folding knives, revealing that his challenges were shared by other craftspeople. These experiences were decisive in shaping his personal vision of what a folding knife can truly be.

His first attempts, although classic, were crucial stages in refining his technique. Jean-Pierre quickly began to rethink knife opening, seeking to combine aesthetics and practicality. The use of a ball to unlock the “liner lock” is one example, and he even innovated by removing the visible assembly screw from the blade pivot on certain models, opting instead for screwed liners.

In pursuit of excellence, Jean-Pierre Martin perfected his art by developing a miniaturised mechanism integrated into 3 mm-thick bolsters and operated by a button. This innovation paved the way for locking systems without a liner or back lock, demonstrating his constant pursuit of improvement and originality.

Jean-Pierre’s approach is characterised by the fact that all his knives can be dismantled, making adjustments and maintenance easier. He even takes attention to detail as far as creating specific components, such as the blade-pivot pin screws and nuts, thereby adding a personal touch to every creation.

Now recognised as a major figure in French knife-making, Jean-Pierre Martin is also a member of the “Deutsche Messermacher Gilde” (German Knifemakers’ Guild). Through these few pieces presented here, he proudly shares the fruits of his work, combining tradition, innovation and technical mastery.
